Tick rate, TPS, latency: separate the villains
“Lag” is a bucket word. Latency is travel time. Tick rate / TPS is how often the simulation commits reality. Jitter is inconsistency — often worse than a steady higher ping.
Measure before you buy more RAM
Spark timings on Minecraft, net_graph culture in Source-like titles, server profilers on sim-heavy games — pick the tool the community trusts, not the loudest forum post.
Networking still matters
Perfect CPU means nothing behind CGNAT or a saturated upload on the operator’s home line. For fundamentals, Cloudflare’s high-level latency explainer is vendor colored but directionally accurate.
