Server guide
Valheim dedicated server on Linux
Valheim’s dedicated server is modest on CPU compared to many survival titles, but it is UDP-sensitive and expects a stable world path. Treat it like any other long-lived service: explicit user, explicit directories, and a unit file you can restart without hunting PIDs.
Install via SteamCMD
Steam’s own documentation for SteamCMD is the canonical reference for login and app updates — start from Valve’s SteamCMD wiki, then apply Valheim’s app ID from the community server guide you trust. Pin your branch (public vs beta) so updates do not surprise you mid-raid.
Ports: 2456–2458 UDP (and friends)
Players expect the default port window. If you offset the base port, you must communicate it clearly. Double-check CGNAT if remote Vikings still cannot join after forwarding rules look “correct.”
Persistence and upgrades
World data lives under your configured data path — back it up before major Iron Gate patches. Pair with our snapshot playbook so rollback is boring, not heroic.
